Art from the earth

Sustainable ceramic art by Frank Hamer and Janet Hamer

1st June – 13th June

Sea Pictures Gallery, Well House, Well Lane, Clare, Suffolk CO10 8NH

Two distinguished ceramic artists express the sustainability of art from purely natural materials – feeding the soul and lifting the spirits.

Janet and Frank Hamer have become something of a legend in studio ceramics through their joint authorship of The Potter’s Dictionary of Materials and Techniques, which explains the sources and character of materials, the behaviour of clays and glaze minerals during the forming and firing processes. It has become the acknowledged potters’ bible from London to Tokyo.

They share a workshop and kiln in rural Wales and both are influenced by the surrounding countryside and wildlife. Janet sculpts birds and Frank paints fish on plates.

Teaching students, mountain walking, and in some cases climbing (!), travelling and potting around the world are all experiences that inform their work and their sense of adventure with clay, and have done for over 60 years.

Within this very special exhibition we can detect these influences appreciating that the work is the result of a lifetime of observation and experimentation.
