Arts in Forestry

Wednesday 10th June 2009, 10.00am to 4.15pm
Woburn House, London WC1H 9HQ
Cost: £25 per delegate
No charge for exhibitors and speakers

This meeting will showcase a selection of projects with the intention of drawing out
insights into the benefits and potential of arts activity in forests.

What is to be discussed?

Taking ‘arts’ in the broadest sense to include all relevant media, the meeting will
consider what art can do for forestry, and what forestry can do for artists, drawing on
practical examples. The focus of this (first) meeting will be on England, although
experience and issues relating to the other GB countries may be discussed.
Depending on the outcome of the meeting, further discussions may be held in
Scotland and Wales.

In the morning sessions we will hear about a number of exciting projects from invited
speakers from arts and countryside organisations and those with particularly relevant
experience. The afternoon session will give an opportunity for participants to draw
out proposals and recommendations for future action and support in smaller group
discussions. The proceedings will be recorded and published.
The day will be chaired by William Weston, who is a nonexecutive
member of the Forestry Commission’s National Committee for England.

Who is hosting the meeting?

This meeting is being organised by Paul Tabbush on behalf of the Forestry Commission, in partnership with the Royal Society for the Arts. Paul is an Independent Consultant who recently retired as Head of Social and Economic Research at Forest Research (the Research Agency of the Forestry Commission).

Exhibiting: You are welcome to bring an example of your work and/or publications
to exhibit.

Hello from Ireland! I am currently documenting, with foresters and my my local community conversion of a small 24y old Sitka spruce plantation into a permanent, mixed sustainable forest as a SLOW ART project - its a mixture of lofi films on youtube, flicker and on my blog www.ecoartnotebook.com. I am lucky enough to be the Communications Officer of Pro Silva Ireland www.prosilvaireland.org, part of the EU wide, 20 year old Pro Silva permanent forestry organisation but I'm using art/social media to show there is another more sustainable method for forestry, that is both economically and ecologically sound. Would be very interested in sharing my work with you, I'm a New Zealander of Irish, Scottish and UK descent living past 15 years in Ireland, so please include us in Ireland too :-)
