Ecology and Artistic Practice

27 - 28 April 2005 RSA, London

Can artists make a difference? Is it the task of art to point out solutions to ecological problems? What are artists currently doing about climate change issues?

Focusing primarily on contemporary visual arts, Ecology and Artistic Practice questions the role of artists addressing environmental change in an international debate at the RSA, London. The symposium discusses pragmatic solutions as well as looking towards Ecology as an alternative, integrated and holistic perspective on culture’s relationship with the natural world.

The programme was launched on 27 April with a keynote address by artist Alfredo Jaar. Speakers include: Prof. Gary Genosko; Clare Cumberlidge; Nils Norman; Dan Peterman; Solitaire Townsend; Jane Trowell; Kayle Brandon & Heath Bunting; Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla; Jan Vervoert; Henrik Håkansson. Chaired by Declan McGonagle.

Poll

As an artist, are you aware of the impact your own practice has on the environment?

Yes, and I consider that when chosing processes and materials.

Yes, but it's better to think of the art first, and the materials and processes second.

No, it's not a consideration when I make my art.
