Manchester International Festival Commissions new Metzger artwork
Gustav Metzger's Flailing Trees
This week Manchester International Festival unveiled its new programme. One of the centrepieces of the biennial, which starts on July 2, is a new commission from Gustav Metzger.
Flailing Trees will comprise 21 inverted willows, a subversion of the natural order that brings nature and the environment into close focus. With flourishing branches replaced by dying roots, the sculpture is both a plea for reflection and a plaintive cry for change. The artwork will be installed at Victory Peace Garden for the duration of the festival, and then be moved to the grounds of the Whitworth Art Gallery.
Gustav Metzger took part in the Nuclear Forum last year for RSA Arts & Ecology.
On Monday July 5 Jeremy Deller also creates his work Procession for the festival on Deansgate mile.
