Brussels: art, environment, debate
RSA Arts & Ecology's Michaela Crimmin takes part in Kaaitheater's art and environment series this month
Burning Ice is a five-day event taking part in Brussels, starting on January 19. Artists, scientists and cultural critics will be discussing the role art can play in encountering environmental ideas, as well as showing their work. Those taking part include Ken Livingstone, Cornelia Parker, Maria Theresa Alves, David Buckland, Heather Ackroyd & Dan Harvey and Amy Balkin. "Art cannot of course change the world, " say the event's organisers, "but as in many other fields, when it comes to climate issues art can make a contribution to the development of innovative ideas. Ideas that will gradually gain ground and perhaps give rise to new practices in research, education, economics and – who knows – political decision-making. Burning Ice is intended to be a forum for these ideas."
Crimmin is taking part in a session on January 24th called Reimagining the Landscape and is impressed by the programme of events Guy Gypens and Jeroen Peeters, the event's curators, have created. "It covers so much that I want to explore, from food production, to ideas of the future," says Crimmin.
