He walks the line
Earlier this year the artist Simon Faithfull set off on a journey along the Meridian line. The first part of resulting film has just been released.
Extract 1 from 0°00 Navigation is now viewable on The Art of Common Space website. It's the first part of a film of his journey from south to north Britain along Greenwich Meridian. The complete film will be shown at Gunpowder Park, London, in March 2009.
The first film shows Faithfull swimming towards the south coast, scaling a white cliff at Peacehaven, and then clambering over suburban pergolas and privets as he attempts to travel along the line. He's followed by a single, silent black-and-white camera which lends the venture a Keaton-esque air. The journey will later take him across the M25.
Faithfull's already completed several projects about journeying. For his film 30km, he used a camera attached to a weather balloon to record the upward journey from a close up of his face up to the edge of space. In 2004, a guest of the British Antarctic Survey, Faithfull logged his journey there by sending a pixel drawing home each day,
0°00 Navigation is commissioned by Haring Woods Associates/Landscape+Arts Network Services as part of the Art of Common Space programme at Gunpowder Park.
